The Equine Art of Leslie
Ann Webb
Visit
Leslie and her horses at:

Eitan
and I met Leslie at a clinic
in Grass Valley
featuring respected
CA. horseman
Richard Winters. We were
delighted to meet her and
during our conversation we
found out she was one of our
favorite artists. We are
very excited to have her
join LHH 2008 and share her
unique artistic talents. We
know you will love her work
as we do.
From her website:
If someone asked when I began to
walk, I couldn't say. But I do
know when I began to ride. I was
only 3 and I'll never forget the
ponies at the fair, weaving
their way through a maze of
panels to take their riders on
an adventure greater than
traveling in circles. The moment
I saw my first horse, I was
hooked. I couldn't get enough of
them, and every one I saw from
that moment on, I had to
excitedly exclaim, "look at the
horses" with such overwhelming
glee, it was as if nothing in
the world mattered when in the
presence of these magnificent
animals. If someone asked
when I began to walk, I couldn't
say. But I do know when I began
to ride. I was only 3 and I'll
never forget the ponies at the
fair, weaving their way through
a maze of panels to take their
riders on an adventure greater

enough of them, and every one I

overwhelming glee, it was as if
nothing in the world mattered
when in the presence of these
magnificent animals
There is a sense of knowing, a
tranquil state of excitement that
soothes the soul when one encounters
that one thing they were called to
do. For me, this quest fulfilled the
three qualities I desired most; to
be surrounded by horses, to
enlighten through creative
expression, and to have a cause or
purpose of great importance. As I
picked up my brushes and invited
horses back into my life, I was
blessed in the rediscovery of
oneself. I vowed then to dedicate my
life to painting these larger than
life colorful horses and to saving
as many of them as possible.

Judy Vargas Designs
Horses have always been a big
part of Judy’s life. As she grew
up in the small Northern
California town of Nevada City,
she was involved in every aspect
of horsemanship, from rodeos and
roping to showmanship and
jumping. Some of her fondest
years were spent helping her
father show their Arabian horses
all over the West Coast.
Later, she spent many years on a
cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon
where she learned the western
way of life. |

It was also at this time that, at a
local foundry, she became familiar with
the process of casting bronze sculpture.
Fascinated by this process, she created
and cast her first sculpture, the image
of a Scottish Terrier that belonged to
some close friends. This media
captivated her and she continued to
refine her talent.
“Horses are the real work of art. I have
just been given the privilege of
recreating that form and making it
timeless. I think equine artists, no
matter what media they use, have a
special passion for the animals they
portray; it’s part of our being. Anytime
I hear the word “horse”, it makes my
head turn.”

JEANNE KERAN SHOEMAKER
It
all started in an art class when she was
a sophomore in high school.
Manipulating the clay into something
lifelike, magic happened. Having
to wait over 30 years to work with clay
again and then to even have the dream of
casting in bronze finally was
realized. Primarily self-taught, with
a four day workshop and some mentoring
from sculptor/friend Judy Vargas, Jeanne
now has a series of bronzes. Horses,
other animal life and people are her
favorite subjects. A realist at heart,
she tries to capture the personality,
beauty and passion that she sees through
her eyes.
Jeanne
was raised on a ranch in Clovis, Ca.
filled with horses, cattle, sheep and
any other little creature she could get
her hands on including a monkey. She
married a thoroughbred racehorse trainer
and spent many years at the track.
Watching a beautiful horse run with the
freedom in his heart is one of the most
beautiful things she has ever seen.
Jeanne's bronzes have been seen and
awarded at "Art at the Classics" Draft
Horse Classic in Grass Valley,
California State Fair/Best of Show
class, Ca. Horse Expo, Nevada County
Fair, and Emerald Downs in Washington.

Alistad Studios
Allaura Stadel is 15 years old and started
her love of art at the age of 2, beginning
with the learning of finger painting.
Drawing came after that, inspired during the
time in which she had to sit quietly at
meetings attended with her mom and dad.
During this time she would render her own
interpretations of coloring book pages and
experiment with her own fabrications. In
addition, she would color to pass her time,
also working to draw her own prototypes. She
developed a passion for color, and this love
of color and illustrating has shaped and
evolved over the years.
Her love of horses, of course, came at about
the same time. Mom grew up with them, and to
pass on the infatuation, she exposed Allaura
to the realm of horses. When at the Fair,
Allaura was placed on a horse’s back for the
first time, and she was hooked at this first
fair-time pony ride. Continually bugging
her parents for a horse, a pony, anything to
ride, they set out on a search for a steed
suitable for a young child.
We
were told about a horse that needed a home
to retire to. The ranch we arrived to was
Wolf Creek Ranch. Introductions to the
owners came first; afterwards, introductions
to the horse occurred. We learned that he
was called Carlyle Black Coffee and a fine
gentleman of a Morgan. Coffee turned out to
be Allaura’s first horse. Slowly but surely,
he taught Allaura much about what was
required to ride. After meeting a dear
friend, we then were caught in the holds of
the ‘show bug’. We attended shows, winning
quite a few ribbons, blue more common as
time went by. Inevitably though, Coffee
became too old to show, and lived to be 31
years old. Sadly, we began the search for a
new horse, and we started showing Morgans
right after.
Along the way, Allaura
continued to draw. Last year, we attended
the first Light Hands Horsemanship clinic,
and Allaura was drawing while listening to
the clinicians. Debbie saw her drawings and
encouraged us to print them on t-shirts and
such.
This year, Allaura Stadel will be presenting
her first five designs at the Light Hands
Horsemanship Clinic, and we would be greatly
pleased if you stop by our booth!
